last day of summer (again!)

19th Sept.
Another Saturday and another 8miler from Gullane round the Yellowcraigs loop. Enough sunshine to feel like the last day of Summer, again. First stop at the mile marker at Archerfields gatehouse to see who is spread out on the brambles soaking up the minimal temperatures and watery sunshine.

speckleds flying high

darter having a snooze

Mainly speckled woods, a white and a red admiral. The white was a bit shredded and difficult to identify the exact species. The missing wingtip did not help. Usually the dark wingtip defines the species and although this looked like a GVW there were no distinct Vs on the washed-out underside and so it might have been a large. (But I wouldn't stake my life on that!) The speckleds fought aerial battles and although I suspected the RA on the berries of being the drunk one from last visit, it had a full compliment of wings, and so, wasn't.

the buddleias below Archerfields only had a solitary speckled

On the way back to Archerfields gatehouse there were a few speckleds

meanwhile back at the gatehouse

right that's defo a large white!

a speckled gets in on the action

small white on the last of the buddleia flowers

mr speckled takes exception to me ramming the camera in his face

Traditionally we do the last mile back into Gullane at half marathon race pace

8 miles and a curtain falls across summer (again.)
