Walk around Warriston 26th Nov. Some photos. I am currently over 2000 miles away but trying to catch up on a little blogging while off on holiday. It is a little hard to get my Edinburgh head on so I’ll keep it brief.
Nice to see this female goosander on my way along the Water of Leith. It was preening while standing in the shallows. I took a few photos and then threw some bread as a thank you. It scooted across the water eagerly to get the bread.
There was lots of bird action near the tunnel. I had taken to standing there and sometimes putting out food for the birds along the miniature stream than goes past. Once the birds arrive there, one will have the idea of a splash about, which often encourages others to do similar.

delighted to see a bullfinch
In no time there were 2 or 3 males and a female bullfinch. They are really social birds and hang about in cheerful groups.

I think this was the first appearance of mr rat. I was pleased as they are as irregular subjects as kestrels and otters although we hear they outnumber the rare and beautiful things; and sure enough I wouldn’t want them running about my attic. However they are intelligent and successful and we shouldn’t hate them for that. They are certainly very cautious and I had to work quite hard to get these photos. If I moved forward at anything more than glacial pace it would dive back into the undergrowth. However its enthusiasm for a free feed of sunflowers seeds overcame its shyness and it would return for more after a while, keeping a beady eye on the surroundings for humans and dog-walkers.
The birds were a little bit wary of the rat but its presence did not put the birds off.
